1 Samuel 14:6 Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.” 7 “Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
It can be implied that Jonathan acted in disobedience here, for he sneaked out of the camp, and without so much as a permission from the King. Jonathan took matters into his own hands like Queen Esther did in the book of Esther 5, yet the Lord honored his faith with success for the whole of Israel.
To do the needful, the path often may not be smooth. It may be filled with do’s and don’ts, obstacles here and there, hindrances abounding at every turn. Just a handful of men with Father, Jonathan must have thought. What a pitiful state we are in as a nation? You might only have one person who believes in you and that is more than enough friend. Jonathan only had his armor bearer and he routed the Philistines outpost.
Jonathan could have decided to follow protocol, and remain in the cave or wherever he was hiding, but then he thought about God. What can He not do with one as with many? With pieces of fish and bread, He fed countless –John 6:1-14, from a small jar of oil, he established an industry – 2 Kings 4. What can God not do in and with your life? A definite statement God is making even now!
What can He not do? From today’s reading in the Open Heavens Devotional by Pastor E. A. Adeboye, the state of our mind determines what and how the Lord will use us. Having a servant spirit, a teachable spirit will endear you to the Lord. I believe Jonathan’s motive for stepping out was not so he can be hailed, just like David was not so much interested in what will be done to him who faced Goliath, as much as in destroying he who is defying the Lord’s army – 1 Samuel 17.
What then is your motive for stepping out of your comfort zone? What is your motive for taking that stand friend? Are you living for the Lord’s glory or for the adulation of men? A servant spirit is not about people pleasing, eye service kind of people! A Servant Spirit, a teachable spirit, refers to those who’s focus is about pleasing God in all their ways, serving God and man, submitting under those who themselves have submitted to God in every way, doing things not out of selfish gain, but for God’s kingdom on earth.
Do you have a servant spirit friends? Do I Lord have a servant spirit? Father, in every way my friends and I have rebelled against your commands, please forgive us today in Jesus mighty name. Create in us a right spirit, a heart of flesh submitted to you to mold for the purpose for which we are created. Psalms 51:17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. Forgive us, Lord!!!!
Shalom! Shalom! Shalom!
