I was somewhere yesterday where I saw the hopelessness of a life devoid of Christ. I remembered the story of King Saul, anointed as King over Israel, prophesied with the Prophets and yet ended up consulting mediums. He lost touch with God in the quest to find relevance. Brethren, relevance is no where else except in the presence of God. It is our relationship with God, through Christ Jesus that gives the tenacity to keep keeping on, giving us hope and helps us to bear fruit that abide in every condition.
So many are lost, lining up to consult mediums in droves, both young and old. It was baffling to me. Everyone wants to know what the future hold for them, we want to know what our past has to do with our present and future. We all want to make meaning of what is going on in our lives. My heart melted looking at these ladies all dressed up, maked up, with expensive clothing, perfume and jewelry to cover up the ache in their heart. Only a relationship with Christ can do that, but they do not know. How I wished I could open them up for this possibility. A lot scoffs at the idea, and some haven’t even heard of Christ saving grace in the land of freedom to worship. How disheartening!
I Samuel 28:3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.4 The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem,while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa. 5 When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. 6 He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. 7 Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.”
15 Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”
“I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
16 Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy? 17 The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. 18 Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today. 19 The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”
King Saul did not listen to Samuel while he was alive, did not obey God’s instruction either but when faced with fear of destruction he sought a medium. Should he not have sought the living God in ashes and sackcloth? In humility and repentance? So also is many of us, looking for help in the wrong places.
Father we ask for mercy. Forgive us of all unrighteousness Oh Lord, in our words, thought and action. Please let the light of the gospel touch our hearts and set it aglow for all to see. We need your help Lord. Deliver us from error, enlighten us – sight for our eyes, hearing to our ears, and a receptive heart. No one that comes to the Father will be cast out, we humbly come to you Lord, have mercy on us in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
Salvation, seek the Lord while He may be found. Oh, you think you do not need the Lord because all is well with you? How about your eternity? You are an eternal being either you like it or not and there is only one choice of heaven or hell. Where do you want to be? Choose ye this day whom you will serve! Come to Jesus, repent of your sins, acknowledge your need for a saviour. Jesus is the way, the truth and life, no one comes to the Father except by Him!
