A kindred spirit! What is that? A kindred spirit refers to having same beliefs, attitudes, or feelings. Someone who likes or cares about the same things as you do. It refers to being like minded.

To be like minded, having a kindred spirit is not limited to men as buddies or women as friends/ soul sisters. It transcends gender and it is not erotic. Philippians 2:Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

David and Jonathan had a kindred spirit. 1 Samuel 18:1 Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 ……………..Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.

1 Samuel 19:1 Now Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David; but Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted greatly in David. So Jonathan told David, saying, “My father Saul seeks to kill you. Therefore please be on your guard until morning, and stay in a secret place and hide. And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak with my father about you. Then what I observe, I will tell you.”

Thus Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you. For he took his life in his hands and killed the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?”

In the account of Mary, her sister Martha and their brother Lazarus in John 11 we can deduce that they had a close relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. In verse 3 the sisters sent a word to Jesus, ” Lord, the one you love is sick”.

Romans 16:1  I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea, that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also.

Paul went on to acknowledge “Mary who worked very hard for you in verse 6, Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord, my dear friend in Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord- Verse 12. Greetings went out also in verse 15 to Philologus, Julia – presumably a woman, Nereus and his sister ……. . All these women referred to by Paul had the same vision as him, they were like minded in the things of God and had a common purpose – to spread the gospel and be a blessing to the body of Christ Jesus their Lord.

Women like you and I friends played an integral part in the spread of the gospel in Paul’s days! They attended to the needs of Christ Jesus in His days on earth. In our days now, in this present age, what are we going to be noted for? Are we up to it now! The ball is in our court to rise and shine, for our light has come and the glory of the Lord is risen upon us.

This is the time to rise up and empower the feeble hands, give a helping hand, a shoulder to lean on, soothe a broken heart, bear another’s burden, see through your own tears to comfort another. Christ strength is made perfect in our weakness. There is unexplainable joy in being a succor to another. Will you rise above your fears, challenges, and what not today and be Christ’s hands, feet, ears and mouth today. Touch someone today with your life, a smile maybe, a compliment, listening ears or pray, yes even for a total stranger, God hears our every breath. Let us transcend every systemic and cultural barrier to reach out to the higher calling of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Jesus is Lord!!! Shalom!!!
